An All American favorite.
These were my favorite sugar cookies growing up. I don’t like the flat, doughy flavor of most sugar cookies. These cookies have a cake-like texture, and the hint of nutmeg reminds me of donuts…which I haven’t eaten in years! Rolling and cutting these into festive shapes makes these a sure family favorite. Try a variety of cookie cutters and sprinkles to change it up. Read the recipe.
Cake-like Sugar Cookies
2 c. sugar
1 c. vegetable shortening
1 heaping teaspoon of nutmeg
1 t. salt
2 round teaspoons baking powder
1 level teaspoon of baking soda
1 c. sour milk (1 tsp. lemon juice in measuring cup, then add milk to fill measuring cup)
6 c. flour
Combine all ingredients and roll out to about 1/4″ thick (they will puff up). Cut into shapes, place on cookie sheet, and sprinkle with colored sugars or other sprinkle candy. Bake at 375° until very lightly browned on bottom.
